Universities today are often maligned and used by populist politicians as examples of spaces disconnected from the realities facing society. This is despite the clear connections that exist between post-secondary education and healthy more just and innovative societies. It is important, now more than ever, to think about how universities orient themselves to their communities and make clear the contributions they make. By advancing the idea of the 'academic citizen scholar' this seminar seeks to explore how to change the narrative whilst delving into how university leaders and scholars alike can model attributes, fostering a transformative and inclusive university-society dynamic. The seminar will explore how to establish a collective commitment to brave spaces, cultural humility, and “mistakability”, promoting an entrepreneurial spirit for both students and the professoriate.
